Native American Necklaces

Necklaces in Native American culture come in a very wide variety of forms, materials and tradition. Every tribe has different designs and materials and each group within a tribe have their necklace design. Necklaces are often used to identify the person’s status in the village and affiliation. They are also used for protection from danger as the necklaces are believed to be the source of power. Like most Native American jewelries, they are made from materials found in the surroundings but metals were later introduced.

A very popular form of Native American necklace is the squash bottom necklace. They are often made by southwestern tribes. These necklaces are differentiated through their pendant which has very intricate design depending on the village. Chokers are also a well known form of Native American necklace. They have been in existence for hundreds of years and they continue to be fashionable until today. Fetish necklaces are also known since they are often used to symbolize power as they are often made with animal parts. Beaded and metal necklaces are also a recognized type of Native American necklace. Beaded necklaces are now donned with different gems while the metal necklaces were later introduced which provided additional designs.
